This award, sponsored bySDM, is from the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at the University of Southern Mississippi. The award recognizes excellence in the safety and security aspects of sports venues by their designers, builders and installers.

MicroPower was one of two finalists in the 2014 awards competition, both of which presented their case studies to attendees at the 2014 National Sports Safety and Security Conference and Exhibition. After listening to both case studies, attendees then cast their votes for the winner based on five criteria.

The winning solution – described at the conference by Dave Tynan, vice president of global marketing and business development at MicroPower Technologies, and Joe Heinlein, IT director for the American Airlines Center – involved a surveillance solution for monitoring the 13 access points for the parking lots surrounding the facility. The security team at the venue, which hosts the Dallas Stars NHL hockey team, the Dallas Mavericks NBA basketball team, and many entertainment events, needed to be able to closely observe cash parking lot collections to ensure that employees followed protocol.

Lab-testing process ensures the reliability and benefits of the MicroPower system in spectator sports facilities

San Diego – July 7, 2014 – MicroPower Technologies Inc., an award-winning provider of surveillance solutions optimized for rapid, cost-effective deployment, announced today that its solar, wireless surveillance system has achieved a positive evaluation by the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4).

NCS4 officials evaluate a variety of solutions to determine how specific technologies can help solve security issues, such as crowd monitoring, tailgating issues and event management, in and around facilities that host spectator sports. The MicroPower solar, wireless surveillance platform demonstrates value in this market because it can be easily and rapidly redeployed as areas of interest change, even in environments with limited power and network infrastructure. Additionally, the solution drives collaboration between law enforcement and first responders due to its open, IP-based architecture and integration with other network-enabled devices.

NCS4 testing follows a proven framework to evaluate security technologies systematically to ensure products meet or exceed expectations in the dynamic spectator sports environment. Evaluation of MicroPower’s surveillance platform in the NCS4 testing laboratory provides users assurance that the system is validated and delivers efficient configuration and deployment. The outdoor surveillance solution tested positively in all aspects of the evaluation process, including reliability, recording, frame rate, sustainability and weather, proving that the outdoor surveillance system can help to solve security challenges in arena and stadium environments and surroundings.
Located at The University of Southern Mississippi, NCS4 supports the advancement of sports safety and security through training, professional development, academic programs and research. It also provides a living laboratory and learning environment where security solutions can be evaluated, demonstrated and showcased through the NCS4 National Sports Security Laboratory.

“The MicroPower surveillance platform has undergone a series of stringent testing processes, as well as technology evaluation in the NCS4 laboratory. This process validates the use of the solution in the stadium environments,” said Steve Miller, Ph.D., Associate Director, Training and Business Development, NCS4. “Users in this market who choose to integrate MicroPower solutions as part of their security infrastructure can do so with the confidence that the technology meets our validation criteria and helps mitigate the security risks associated with today’s sporting events.”

MicroPower Technologies delivers reliable and cost-effective wireless video surveillance solutions that create superior value for customers by reducing deployment and infrastructure costs. Its wireless video security solution does not require cabling for power or data transmission. This unique approach removes the restrictions found with traditional cameras and allows users to place cameras at the point of highest risk without the added the complexity of trenching, or pulling for data or power cables.

“Evaluation by NCS4 assures stadiums and arenas of the security, scalability and reliability of the MicroPower solution. Moreover, because the system combines wireless and solar technologies, and is mobile, users can enjoy significant cost and infrastructure savings as the need for cabling and therefore, trenching, is eliminated,” said Dave Tynan, Vice President of Global Marketing and Sales, MicroPower Technologies.

San Diego, Calif. – May 28, 2014MicroPower Technologies Inc., an award-winning provider of surveillance solutions optimized for rapid, cost-effective deployment, today announced that it was selected as the winner in the American Technology Awards (ATAs) Green Technology category.

Sponsored by TechAmerica, the ATAs honored 15 products and services out of 100 entries as category winners. The awards were announced at the ATA Showcase last week in Washington, and winners will be honored in June during a gala evening at the Ronald Reagan Building.

MicroPower’s solar-powered, wireless cameras offer an environmentally sustainable and low-maintenance surveillance solution that consumes much less power than traditional systems. It also can be deployed and operated for a fraction of the capital and operating cost expected with comparable video surveillance platforms. The cameras use ½ watt of power to transmit streaming video from ½ to two miles without the need to trench for cabling requirements – thus reducing the need for additional infrastructure and minimizing environmental impact.  In remote locations, such as electrical power substations, the system’s design allows users to create a video local-area network. This approach enables users to transmit video only upon an alarm or an event.

MicroPower’s systems provide a solution to an important dilemma: how to evolve technologically while remaining environmentally conscious. A growing number of large institutions that consume massive amounts of energy currently seek out ways to reduce their environmental footprint. Since 2008, MicroPower has invested in extensive research and development to use the existing concepts of solar technology, wireless networking and power reduction to make its surveillance system highly reliable and scalable.

“Solar energy itself is not a new concept, but using it specifically as a surveillance and security solution is a significant step forward in innovation,” said Aaron Tankersley, CEO, MicroPower Technologies. “Our unique and cost-effective approach to video surveillance also revolutionizes the way our customers can leverage video for operational purposes while maintaining an environmentally-positive corporate culture.”

Video surveillance has been on the rise in the U.S. over the past several years, as camera costs have fallen and technology has improved.

That market growth is fueling San Diego’s MicroPower Technologies, which specializes in making solar powered, wireless surveillance systems for hard-to-reach locations.

This week, the 20-employee firm won TechAmerica’s American Technology Award in the green technology category. TechAmerica, formerly known as the American Electronics Association, handed out awards to 15 products nationwide.

Though it won in the green-tech category, “we don’t do anything special with the solar,” said MicroPower Chief Executive Aaron Tankersley. “What we have done is develop a system that is so power efficient that solar becomes a viable way of doing video. You could do solar with traditional camera systems, of course. But you would need 10 times the panels and 10 times the batteries.”

Sustainability is a major concern for today’s enterprises. Organizations increasingly are looking at how they can be more environmentally conscious and less disruptive to the ecosystem. The clear trend is toward addressing sustainability issues proactively and globally.

At first glance, security and sustainability may not go hand in hand. But in particular, one aspect of security — the design and use of perimeter video surveillance — can become more sustainable. This article focuses on how we as an industry can help increase perimeter security efforts while maintaining a “green” approach.

On Target: Pinpointing the Perimeter Security Challenges of Today’s Military Bases

It is an unfortunate truth that military bases, filled with individuals dedicated to keeping America safe, sometimes come under threat within their own country. Incidents like the 2009 Fort Hood shooting and the 2013 killings at the Washington Navy Yard serve as reminders that the military is not immune to the threat of violence and crime.

Tynan: Shift from a capital expenditure to an operating expenditure

SAN DIEGO—Wireless surveillance provider MicroPower is offering a new financing option designed to speed projects along and create RMR opportunities for integrators.

For a limited time, MicroPower will offer financing for the installation and product cost of its Helios surveillance system.

The financing can work in a number of different ways, according to Dave Tynan, MicroPower VP of global marketing and sales. “The end user can finance through us and we pay the integrator, or they can work through the integrator and the integrator may add a software as a service [fee, or maintenance agreement] and wrap that into the deal.”
